English >> Grammar >> Punctuation (Quotation Marks " ")

We use quotation marks (“ ”) for many purposes.

Direct Quotations
  • The politician said: We will not give in to their demands.
  • Mr. Lim suggested: Why don’t we have a party tonight.

We often see direct quotations (exact spoken or in print words) in newspapers and magazines.

Dialogue
  • Susan cried: I could not sleep the whole night.

We often use dialogue in our essay writing. They add “life” to our composition.

However, we should not overuse quotations in our writing works unless they are really necessary.
