The way roots grow depends on the plants' living environment. Most plants have their roots in the soil. But, some plants have to adapt to their unusual environments or they will perish.
Below are some examples of plants which have their roots grown above ground:

Air plants (epiphytes) use their roots to cling to tree trunks and to absorb moisture directly from the air. |

Mistletoe and other parasitic plants dig their roots into host plants to obtain water and nutrients. |

Vines have aerial roots that support them as they climb. Their roots can be found both beneath the ground and above the ground. |

Mangrove trees have submerged and aboveground roots to anchor themselves and get oxygen from the air.
